Her best foot forward: Katelin Fields, Ravenna Ravens kicker, only girl playing in PTC

When Katelin Fields decided to join the Ravenna football team two years ago, her mom was hesitant because of stereotypes surrounding the typically all-male sport. “I told her, ‘If I’m making a mistake, let me learn from it,’” Fields said. Now a senior kicker for the team, Fields cons...

School
Senior prank proved costly: 1909 Ravenna commencement canceled after class defied superintendent PDF Print E-mail

What began as a harmless senior prank turned into a showdown with authority at Ravenna High School a century ago.

By the time it ended, the Class of 1909 had learned an unforgettable — and quite painful — lesson. One that cost the 20 graduates their commencement and almost cost them their diplomas.

Raising the class colors from the cupola of the high school had become a traditional rite of spring, but Superintendent E.O. Trescott believed “flag rustles” were disruptive and had issued orders against the practice. Class colors would only be displayed on class days or at commencement, he decided.

On the night of Thursday, May 6, 1909, some of the boys in the senior class made their way to the high school, where they nailed the senior flag to the topmost pinnacle of the school, which was located at Highland Avenue and Walnut Street.

The colors were flying proudly when Trescott arrived at 7 the following morning. He ordered several of the senior boys to remove them.

Seniors Earl Stevens, Forrest Pfile and Max Pitkin went up to the cupola to take down the flag and found that they needed assistance. Principal H.B. Turner corraled three more senior boys to help them.

A crowd of 13 seniors — more than half of the class — gathered on the lawn of the school while the six classmates were struggling with the colors.

Football....Hail to the Champs

Hail the Champions!! Come on Ravens!! Lets go Ravenna!! These and many other battle cries echoed throughout the school last fall, as the football season drew to a close.

The 1940 season was a huge success, as figures will show.  The Ravens won 6, lost 2, and tied 1.
Unbeaten in league competition, the Ravens walked off with the Western Reserve League championship, the first maroon and blue football championship since 1935.

Ravenna highs football season of 1939 is now history. Let us deliver into the records and see what the Maroon and Blue has accomplished this year.

The Ravens got off to a bad start against a heaver shaker eleven and were defeated by the close margin of 13 to 12.

Likewise the failure to make a conversion lost the game against Akron Buchtel. Outplayed in the first half recovering a Ravenna fumble in the third quarter, the Griffins dashed for the winning touchdown. "Doc" Romito received an injury which kept him out for the rest of the season and "Russia" Havre dislocated his shoulder, which kept him out till the Salem game.

Still just a little on the wrong end, the Ravens lost the next game to a highly rated Salem eleven by an automatic safety. The game ended 2 to 0.

Due to their losing three games by a total margin of only four points the Ravens were voted the most unlucky team in Ohio.

In a surprising walk-away, Ravenna defeated a Wadsworth team to the tune of 30 to 7. A 60 yard touchdown dash by Ed Kieslebach provided a thrill for the spectators.

Completely outplayed, the Ravens lost the deciding league game with St. Vincent, but they won their laurels for being the first team to score against the all powerful Irish team, the final score was 14 to 6.
